Childminder Case Studies

It is great to hear from those working as a childminder in Hull.
See below case studies from local childminders.

Being a Childminder is incredibly fulfilling and exciting, no two days are the same!

When I first started in the role, I wanted a job that fitted around my own family life and I enjoyed working with children. As I've continued in the role for the past 10 years, I've developed a deeper passion for Early Years and learnt more about how important and crucial the early years really are.

I love being my own boss and planning my days with various activities with the children. My favourite part of the job is being able to take the children on outings; walks, parks, museums, farms, dance classes, soft play areas, trips to the local fire station are just a few examples of the things I've experienced with the children.

I also love working in a smaller setting as it means I get the chance to build strong, nurturing relationships with the children and get to know the families I work with too. I also enjoy the different courses and training I've done over the years as this has been so beneficial for me and I feel that I am constantly learning and developing as a practitioner.

My days start with the before school children, as I do school runs to the local primary school, then we go out every day (with the odd exception). We come back for lunch and then do different activities and have free play. We always have story time before the school run, then go and collect the older children from school.

It's been fantastic to see some of the relationships built between different ages in the setting. A final bonus of the job is all the fun I get to have. From dressing up for World Book Day each year to throwing Christmas parties to playing games with the children, there's never a dull day!

Childminding (the gift that keeps on giving)

I worked in 3 childcare settings prior to becoming a childminder. I really loved my job, however, I decided that by having my own setting I could give the children in my care a home from home environment and lots of opportunities to explore the local area. I promote their learning and development through play-based activities, taking into account the children’s individual needs and stage of development.

Childminding is a very rewarding career, supporting little ones and having positive relationships with their families makes my job worthwhile. Knowing that the children are happy, safe and secure in my setting and having lots of fun.

The children enjoy many different activities, both in the setting and visits out. We regularly visit museums, soft play, the local parks and farms etc.

The activities and resources in the setting promote each child’s development, observing and planning next steps to ensure they receive a positive, enjoyable time with me.

The feedback I receive from parents is very important and helps me to tailor the children’s learning around them individually. But, most importantly is the reactions I get from the children, those heart warming moments that I wouldn’t receive in any other job.

Honestly, I never once heard “I love you Dianne” when working in a factory.

I couldn’t imagine doing anything else now.

We have been childminding for nineteen years this year (2025) and it is very much a part of everything that we do.

We provide a safe & happy place for children, where they can learn, grow and have fun!

It is more than work to us especially as we now care for children who are relatives of children that we have cared for previously over the years.

We have books, toys, resources & activities inside/outside to stimulate development in all age groups and areas of learning. We offer outings to local parks, and places of interest & trips during the school holidays. We also visit playgroups dance & gymnastic/rugby/football/garden and nature sessions.

We have experience of caring for children with additional needs/disabilities and helping support them and their families alongside other professionals whilst also helping them to progress whilst having lots of fun with all their friends at LSA.

Childminding is very rewarding and been a part of a young child’s journey alongside their family and helping them to progress and achieve including at times when they are perhaps finding things more difficult makes our job like no other and not only rewarding but really enjoyable.

The feedback we receive from parents/carers is very important and helps us to reflect on what we do and provide but most importantly is the reactions we receive when we open the door following the weekend and a child cannot wait to run in and greet us or the messages and phone calls we receive from children we once cared for, these are the moments that help us recognise just how important caring for children is and the impact all those involved has on future generations and we are privileged to be a part of it.
